OUR SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE


The independent international Scientific Committee advises and assists The NASH Education Program’s team in the design and execution of disease awareness initiatives. It is comprised of four world renowned NASH experts whose clinical expertise ideally spans both hepatology and diabetology. NASH is indeed more than just a liver disease, and the metabolic dimension of the pathology can not be ignored.

SVEN FRANCQUE, MD, PHD

Hepatologist, Professor of Medicine, University of Antwerpen (Belgium)

Professor Sven Francque, Chairman of the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology of the Antwerp
University Hospital in Belgium, is an international leader in NAFLD and NASH. He is a leading investigator in
multiple clinical trials and research programs in the field and also serves as a senior clinical researcher for the
Research Fund of the Flemish government. In addition, Prof. Francque is a research partner in several European
consortia and was a partner in the first EU NAFLD and NASH Policy Summit in 2017.

KENNETH CUSI, MD, FACP, FACE

Endocrinologist, Chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism, University of Florida (United States)

Professor Kenneth Cusi is a graduate of the University of Buenos Aires , board certified in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, graduated from the Center of Medical Education & Clinical Research in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Dr. Cusi is also a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists. He is a principal investigator in numerous ongoing clinical research projects in T2DM and NAFLD, as he has found across his extensive research that most type-2- diabetic patients tend to also have NAFLD.

STEPHEN HARRISON, MD, PHD

Hepatologist, Medical Director of Pinnacle Clinical Research, Texas (Unites States)

Pr Stephen A. Harrison, board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, graduated from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine. Pr Harrison served as colonel in the US Army, and retired in 2016 after 20 years of dedicated service to his country. He is known internationally for his research in hepatitis C and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease with over 170 publications in these fields. Professor Harrison believes there is a need for a multidisciplinary approach to address all challenges related to NASH.

BERTRAND CARIOU, MD, PHD

Diabetologist, Endocrinologist, Director of the Thorax Institute, Nantes (France)

Professor Cariou is a physician specialized in Endocrinology and Metabolism. He graduated from the Nantes
University in France and specialized with a Ph.D. in Endocrinology and cellular interactions from the University
of Paris XI. He is a principal investigator in numerous ongoing research programs, both academic and industrial.
He is also a member of the Scientific Committee of the French Diabetes Society (Société Française du Diabète;
SFD), and the Director of the Nantes Thorax Institute.
